Chess clubs are weekly meetings, usually one hour long, of a group of students with a coach. During the first half of each club meeting, the coach teaches a lesson. During the second half, the students are paired up for club ladder games. Tournaments are a chance for players to use what they've learned in chess club. Our tournaments offer a high level of competition for advanced players, but are also very beginner-friendly. Tournaments are non-elimination, so all players get to play all the games. We suggest that new chessplayers try out a tournament or two as soon as they master the rules. At almost every tournament, there is a chess master present who will analyze the players' games for free and offer some advice on how to improve. The top individuals and school teams in each section win trophies. Chess camps are typically held over the summer, and last for one week. The student to coach ratio is much lower than for a regular club, so the students all get quite a bit of individual coaching. Camps mix chess instruction and serious practice games with less formal activities like blitz and bughouse. All campers get a T-shirt and a tournament-style chess set. |
