Hello [NAME]
As the fall chess season winds down, we have many tournament winners to congratulate - both students and coaches! We also have several exciting new chess activities for the winter, as well as some changes to established tournament formats.
First of all, congratulations go out to Silver Knights chess coach IM Bryan Smith, who just won the National Chess Congress, a major tournament in Philadelphia. Bryan defeated two Grandmasters and drew another en route to a very impressive tournament victory.
On November 15, we held our first-ever team chess tournament. 20 different teams of 4 players each competed in team match play, with The Philadelphia School "A" team emerging victorious after a 3-1 win against Ithan Elementary "A" in the last round.
The 2008 world chess championship match between Viswanathan Anand of India and Vladimir Kramnik of Russia concluded with a 6.5 - 4.5 victory by Anand. IM Michael Mulyar has analyzed most of the games in the advanced section of our Online Training Center.
We also have some changes to our workshop and tournament format:
- Starting with the December 21 chess workshop, we are offering a $10 discount to students who register by the Wednesday before the workshop
- Starting with the January 24 K-12 tournament, scholastic tournaments will be comprised of a K-6 U/700 section and a K-12 championship section. This should allow beginners and intermediate players to compete against each other in the lower section, while older and stronger players get their own section.
Also, we have a brand-new type of tournament starting on January 23: Friday Night Action. These tournaments are open to players of all ages and skill levels, and will be held once per month on a Friday night in Bryn Mawr. The idea is to allow our stronger scholastic chessplayers to get practice against some higher-rated adults so they can continue to improve. We hope to see some of you there!
And finally, here's a look ahead to some upcoming tournaments:
December 13: Holiday Rumble K-12 tournament (Devon)
January 23: First Friday Night Action open tournament (Bryn Mawr)
February 28: State Warm-Up K-12 tournament (Wayne)
March 7-8: PA K-12 state championships (Carlisle)
March 21: Greater Philadelphia Scholastic Championships (Radnor)
Happy Holidays!
